etienne-jules marey
I came across the work of Etienne-Jules Marey the other night, a link trail from an Eric Meyer distraction link. I was immediately inspired. Marey’s studies were in-depth, and he began with movements of the internal organs of the human body. He later ventured outside the body and to other subjects, like animals and tracked movements of flight. What makes this so fascinating to me, is the way he did it. The presentation of the studies began with artist materials by hand, and then progressed into his invention Chronophotography (the image below of the horse running is one of his Chronographs), which owed part of its existence from Muybridges’ invention— the Zoopraxiscope. Technical jargon and science aside, his studies are art in motion. Do yourself a favor and head over to Expo-Marey and have a look around, the films are in the mediatheque>films section and larger versions are available to view by the link just above the currently playing movie. The mediatheque section also has chronographs, drawings, the actual equipment used in the studies and more…
