afd wordpress2 admin theme
Now Available as a Plugin!
I’m happy to announce tonite that the afd wordpress 2 admin theme is now available as a plugin. First off special thanks to Ping for volunteering to make the plugin. You’ll also notice an option in there to change the colors of the navigation, which is something he needed specifically so that he could tell the difference in the admins between a few of his wordpress installs.
It took alot of css work to get the plugin to override the default admin css. The only area that I couldn’t seem to override was the upload.css. I have provided that file again in this download as an option if you want to replace it with the default one. For me, its absolutely necessary as in order to maintain the aesthetics of my theme. Also I’ve included the fat.js file from the previous theme versions in case you want the colors I’ve used in that, this is also optional if you like the default fat.js colors then no need to replace.
Thanks also to Mike in finding a widget bug, which has been fixed in this update.
I’ve done the updating on my mac tonite and if any of you windows users see anything wonky please let me know.
I’ll also keep the the previous version available for download if you want to use that instead of the plugin. I’ve updated that download with the widget fix.
*10-21-7* updated. I added a rule to set the “view” link on the edit post/page to the left of the edit window instead of absolutely right as the default was.

Installation
- Place the afd_admin folder into your wp-content/plugins directory.
- Activate the plugin.
- Upload the upload.css file included here in the optional/wp-admin/css directory to your wp-admin/css directory and overwrite the existing one.
- Upload the fat.js file included here in the optional/wp-includes/js directory to your wp-includes/js directory and overwrite the existing one.

bebop, you only have to replace the files in the appropriate places in your wp-admin folder with the files in the afd admin zip (see instructions above), the afd admin theme is not an ENTIRE wp-admin directory.
the index.php you are trying to find is in your wp-admin folder, its not in the afd theme, if you dont have it anymore just d/l wordpress again and make sure you have a complete wp-admin folder from the original wp zip, then follow the instructions above and you will be fine.

Hey aypeus, thanks for your interest, and I have mentioned before that there are some things that I have modified in this theme that touch core files. If there were a way to generate a plugin to do that work I would love to have that option.
There are a couple of things that I have overridden in core files because I thought that they were distracting and unnecessary, however, that said, if I wanted to create a plugin for the theme which were just one click activate you would still have to live without those modifications that touch core files (as I mention in the download read me, eg removing the paranthesis around “view site” and the brackets from around “sign out” and “my profile”.
I have also added a class to ul tags to remove list styling. If, there is a consensus of users who would like a plugin w/out these modifications then maybe I would consider doing one. The main reason however I have made this theme was for personal use, I have made it available to others in case there are some who like the look and want to use it.
If you as a user do not want to modify core files then you are welcome to simply replace the wp-admin.css file and there’s no need to touch any of the other wp core files, and as I mentioned above if there is a consensus, then I will consider just making a simple plugin for it, without the additional design fixes.

I did a simple convert of your theme to a plugin. I also had to add some minor tweaks to the css you defined so that the default wp-admin.css style definitions get properly overwritten.

i use the (latest) wp-de-version 2.2.2 form wordpress-deutschland.org and it seems that in this version the admin-theme doesnt work.

I think I found a bug.
I am using WP2.2 and applied your files. Admin area looked great but when I went to edit my widgets under presentation I can add and remove widgets no problem, but when I try to EDIT them (either a text widget or anything else that needs configuring) it opens the widget window but ‘everything ‘greys’ out instead of just the background. Basically rendering the edit function useless.
Just thought I’d point it out.

download the afd_admin_theme-2.3.1.zip, deactivate the plugin, trash it and upload the new version.
activate it and be sure to do a hard refresh in your browser so the css fix kicks in.

Great admin theme. Very clean, orderly, and neat. The only thing I did as a mod was change the links from the blue color to a crimson color to match the aesthetics of my blog and the hover to grey background with crimson font. I was using spotmilk before I discovered this theme via

I’m not at all keen on the default admin style that comes with WordPress [sorry guys, forgive me?] and if you feel the same, I would certainly recommend this plugin. It makes the back-end look so very handsome that you will want to login just to have a look at it, he he he!
