Nice stuff here. My first impression as I saw the new redesign was Jason Santa Maria. He definetely carried his signature style and branding thru the redesign, It’s very clean and simple, and successfully takes that path where clean and simple succeeds rather than being dull and plain. There does seem to be a shift in the layout to go in the blog direction, as opposed to earlier versions. The decision to go 1024×768 on the layout was a good one. This move is for all intensive purposes not that bold for ala, as the bulk of their readers are designers and developers, but its great to see none the less, and I’m sure will endure all the bashings from the liquid layout police.

The markup is exceptionally clean and was pulled off with only a small handful of IE5 hacks. Thanks to Eric Meyer, they’ve got some solid CSS. With this kind of foundation, and the addition of ala’s great content, this site is set to march on into the battlefield of innovation once again.

*Hat Tip to Jennifer Guevin from c|net for the quote.

Yes, I have to agree with most of your assesment.

It is a fine example (as it should be, coming from those folks) of what should be every web designers start page.

However, I am not happy about the 1024 requirement as I never have my browser windows open that wide.. and I generally refuse to resize my window for a singular website.

I guess I’ll have to get over that here… but… I guess you can put me into the liquid layout camp on this one.

    ;-)

I agree Todd, I just decided to accept the 1024, I remember when Stylegala went boldly with the 1024 it was pretty suprising, but they also provided a narrow version which is nice. I like you dont surf full window, I actually dont know of any mac users that do. Maybe they will offer up another style sheet, JSM said things are still getting worked out, so we can just stay tuned…

just like I am with someone elses redesign ;)
